What a golf score tracker should actually do
A golf score tracker should do more than let you type in 18 numbers after a round. The difference between a group scorecard and a solo card
Most golf score trackers give you a card for yourself. You enter your scores, maybe add your playing partners manually, and you see your own round. This is fine if you play golf alone and never compare your game to anyone else.
But golf is not a solo activity. You play with other people. The scorecard should reflect that. A group scorecard shows everyone's scores on one card, updated in real time, visible to every player in the group. Here is what changes when you go from solo tracking to group tracking:
- No duplicate entry. One person enters scores for the group. Nobody else has to enter anything. No comparing cards at the end to make sure they match.
- Real-time visibility. Everyone in the group sees scores as they are entered. The player on the back of the cart can check standings without asking. The person who walked to the wrong fairway can see what everyone made when they get back.
- Side games run automatically. Skins, Nassau, match play, wolf -- they all run on top of the shared scorecard. Enter the score and every game updates instantly. No separate tracking, no mental math.

How it works: One person in the group is the scorekeeper. After each hole, they enter gross scores for each player. bagboy applies handicap strokes automatically based on the course's stroke index. Net scores, running totals, and game standings update on everyone's phone instantly.
How live group scoring works on bagboy
When you create a round on bagboy, you add the players in your group and pick a course. The scorecard loads with the course's par, stroke index, and yardage for each hole. Then:
- The keeper enters scores hole by hole. After each hole, the keeper taps in the gross score for each player. It takes about five seconds per hole.
- Handicap strokes are applied automatically. If your group is playing net games, each player's strokes are placed on the correct holes based on the stroke index. The keeper enters gross scores; bagboy calculates net.
- Everyone follows live. Players who are not the keeper open the round on their phone and see scores update in real time. Standings for every game -- skins, Nassau, match play -- update with each score entry.
- Mid-round check-ins. Between holes, anyone in the group can glance at their phone to see: current standings in every game, who won the last skin, how the Nassau match is going, and the running score for the group.
- Round completion. After the 18th hole (or 9th, if you are playing nine), bagboy finalizes the scorecard, settles all games, and shows who owes who. The completed card posts to the crew feed and becomes a permanent record.
Handicap tracking
bagboy tracks your scoring history and calculates your handicap index automatically based on your scores, the course rating, and the slope rating. When you play net games, bagboy places strokes on the correct holes via the stroke index -- a 15-handicap gets a stroke on the 15 hardest holes. No lookup tables, no manual calculation.
If you already have an official USGA handicap index, you can enter it directly. bagboy will use it for stroke allocation and update it as you play more rounds.
Post-round stats
After a round, bagboy generates stats beyond your total score: scoring average (by course and over time), scoring distribution (birdies through doubles), front nine vs. back nine averages, par-3/4/5 averages, and trends over your last 5, 10, and 20 rounds.
These stats are tracked individually and ranked within your crew. You are not just seeing your own numbers -- you are seeing how you stack up against the people you play with.
Course-specific records
bagboy tracks your best round, best nine, and scoring average at every course you play. Within your crew, the leaderboard filters by course, so you can see who owns each track. Every round at your home course is a chance to set a new record -- your own best, or the crew's.
Leaderboards within your crew
Your stats feed into crew leaderboards: scoring average, side game earnings, rounds played, birdie leaders. Ranked against the people you actually play with, updated after every round. Even a casual Thursday afternoon nine contributes to your standing. Over a season, these rounds tell the story of who is the best golfer in your group.

Does the group need to be connected to Wi-Fi during the round?
No. bagboy works on cellular data. As long as the keeper has a phone signal, scores update for the group. Even in low-signal areas, scores queue and sync when the connection returns.
Can I track a solo round?
Yes. You can create a round with just yourself and use bagboy as a personal score tracker. Your scores still contribute to your handicap, stats, and course records.
How does the keeper enter scores?
After each hole, the keeper taps in the gross score for each player. It is designed to be fast -- a few taps per player per hole. The whole entry takes about five seconds.
What if the keeper enters a wrong score?
